June 17, 2009 - Pediatrician

Hangin out at home....

I remember all the times either my mom, or other mom's would talk about not having enough time to shower. I SO GET IT NOW!!! I haven't quite grasped a routine yet. People tell me you sleep when baby sleeps. Right. So when does everything else get done? Well, I'm making many mistakes and laughing as David and I now really get to experience being parents. Today Caden had his first pediatician's appointment. We reseached a bit to find a doctor who was somewhat familiar with HLHS since ordinary colds etc can affect them a bit different than healthy babies. Luckily found one close by in Crystal Lake.

Caden had sorta a rough morning which carried into the appointment so our quick well-visit turned into a bit over 2 hours. Our 11.5 pound boy managed to pee & poop on the doctor during the various tests, temperature, etc...add in a few meltdowns and a call into Milwaukee and that was our day. Actually, Caden has been quite fussy today, hasn't eaten well, and was very clamy feeling so we were a bit nervous he was coming down with something again. The doctor talked to the NP up in Milwaukee so he too could get a baseline for Caden so nothing was overlooked. I think he is fine, but the peditrician wants to see us again on Friday. Doctors want to hold off on all immunizations for now letting his body have a chance to heal. Probably early July we will start playing catch up on those.

Some more great news is the arrival of Josie Licht who was born yesterday. Congrats to Eric and Meg on their new bundle of joy!

  4. Well welcome to parenthood. You will find a way to get things done, we all do. Some things might not get done right away but will be waiting for you when you get a chance. Thats OK, you should enjoy the time with Caden because time goes by soooooooo fast that laundry, cleaning, organizing etc. can wait. And the saying "sleep when the bab sleeps" is sooooooooo true. DO IT!!! We hope that the doctors app. on friday goes better. Prayers coming from Plainfield. We love ya.

Thanks again for keeping us informed on Caden Marshall. We are adddicted to his progress.
Will be thinking about you in my dreams at 3.am(LOLO).

  6. OK Melissa, all your sayings are SO TRUE! Trust me, with twins, you DO sleep when they do! Everything else some how DOES get done or it all doesn't seem as important as it once did! Even now, the girls are almost 10, I still let things slide by so I can be with them or try to still squeeze in a short nap!! You're doing great! So glad you're home!
    With Love,

  8. Melissa,
My mantra at that stage was "Do what you can and what you can't do, don't worry about." The house may not always be clean, or clear, or smell nice (!!) but if the kids are clean, dressed, and not killing each other, we have a successful day! The two things I know I learned that first year were that it is okay if babies cry and drywall is not toxic if eaten. :) The rest I have blocked out and refuse to comment!

  9. It has been so many years, but I can still remember how tired I used to be. This is just a part of being a mother. You have so many firsts to look forward to. We continue to think of you daily and pray for continued good news with Caden. Love---

  10. Hello Smith Family,

Love the photo, he looks so much like you David. YES, sleep when he sleeps, that is one piece of advice to follow. Dishes, smishes, you can always use paper :)) I think you've been completely inducted into parent ... don't sweat the small stuff. Please call if you need anything!!

    Love, MJ, Tony & boys

  11. Thanks again for the updates, we are all praying for you! When I told Rileigh that Caden got to come home, she jumped up and down and said "I knew my prayers would work!"-oh as if she did it alone! We will all continue to keep you in our prayers for strength and some energy-as all parents need forever!

  12. Good morning Caden-
Today is Thursday June 18th and I wanted to say that you and your dad look very comfortable in you most recent picture...thanks for sharing. However, can you polietly tell your daddy that he shouldn't take pictures in his underpants! Thanks!

On this day back in 1928 Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, with a 21-hour solo flight from Newfoundland to Wales.
She was born on July 24, 1897 and was a noted American aviation pioneer. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, which was awarded to her for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
Then in 1937 she attempted to make a circumnavigational flight of the entire globe. However, Earhart mysteriously disappeared over the Central Pacific Ocean, near Howland Island, during this flight. Her body was never found and she was finally declared dead on January 5, 1939. The fascination around her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.
Have a wonderful day at home Caden

  14. I am sooo glad to hear that all of you are doing well. Think of Caden's gift to the doctor as an initiation... A welcoming of sorts. :)
I hope not to see you back soon but if I do I will be happy to see you since I didn't get a chance to say goodbye!
Keep posting lots of pics! I love to see them!

  15. I hope Caden's fussiness got better as Wednesday went along. I was a little worried when I heard your voice on the phone, Melissa. I worked today though and didn't hear about anything so I assume everything's going well. Still praying for you guys as you transition into a daily routine. Sounds like Caden's sick of everyone looking at his butt all the time. :)

Congratulations on bringing little Caden HOME! I especially loved the picture of him in DAD'S Place with a huge remote control! He did look happy and contented.

  17. Glad to see things are going pretty well at home!!! It's always hard to fit in those showers but the one thing I learned is put them in a bouncy seat in your bathroom while you take a shower. it works for the first few months until they become wiggly, but by then you may have a little more time. It does get easier, don't worry about the other stuff and just enjoy Caden!!! Have a wonderful Father's Day weekend!!

  18. Good morning Caden-
Today is Friday June 19th and is it looking ugly outside…very dark and heavy rains!
Well, the first round of the Crosstown Classic is sort of over since the first game was rained out. I am not sure when the make-up for that game is going to be played. However, once again the overall series, in interleague play is tied; 34-34.
The Chicago Cubs' were struggling since they had already lost the first game and the offense had all but vanished, their fans were growing restless and their veteran manager remained perplexed by this collective hitting slump that was going on in this series.
And then in two innings yesterday, the Cubs put together a rally against their crosstown rivals and emerged with a 6-5 victory over the White Sox and it was one of their most dramatic wins of the season. The Next series we be played later this month at US Cellular Field. Hopefully, that series will be just as exciting as yesterday’s game.
Have a wonderful day at home Caden
