April 24, 2009

Hi everyone. It’s Melissa. It’s been a couple of days since we last posted so I’ll give a recap of what has transpired. Doctor’s tried to wean the oxygen again, but after noticing that Caden was lethargic, and his food intake drastically decreased they returned the oxygen back to the original .5 liters. Caden might be a baby that needs to stay on oxygen until his second surgery. Doctors also removed Caden’s NG tube (feeding tube) from his nose. They wanted to see if he could attempt to eat the maintenance level of 50cc each feeding. If he does this they wouldn’t have to put the tube back in. Caden was off to a slow start only consuming 10 cc but he increased his volume dramatically by later this morning. Although Caden is still occasionally throwing up he is still managing to gain a little weight. He currently almost 9 ½ pounds. Doctors are aiming for at least 10 pounds before he can have his second surgery.

Today, I got to enjoy having my husband back up in Milwaukee with me. We got to leave the hospital for a bit and head to the Milwaukee Zoo to get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful weather. Then my husband treated me to Long John Silvers. Yes, most of you are probably saying YUCK. When is the last time YOU ate at a Long John Silver’s? Let me save you the trip – and don’t go. It was actually his idea not mine. David was convinced their new “Lobster Bites” had real lobster in them and that we must try them. I will tell you I won’t be back anytime soon.

Love -
XOXOXO
Melissa and David

  1. Hi Melissa and David, I have neglected you for a wek as I have been in Texas kid sitting. It sounds as if Caden is doing much better, maybe not with his oxygen, but at least with his eating. Hang in there. The second surgery seems to be right around the corner and we are all hoping and praying that things with Caden will drastically improve after that. I am glad that you both got to leave the hospital today even if it was to Long John Silvers for fake lobster bites. I agree with you Melissa, (yuk) Love you all,

  2. Hi! Glad to hear you both got some fresh air today. It was really nice here also, even with a field trip with kindergarteners to the civic center yesterday!
Every day you are learning more of what suits Caden. He is lucky to have such loving and attentive parents. By his second surgery we are praying for the strength to deal with his needs.

  5. Melissa, David and Caden,

As I pulled in to the driveway tonight and found myself once again looking across the street for any sign of light in the window... I couldnt help but to be moved by the spirit and compassion of our fellow staff members, students and their families. I know am going to send an email to our staff, but couldn't let all Caden's blog followers not know about this wonderful event.

I spent about 4 hours today up at Mitch's in Grayslake and couldn't help but to be moved by the people who showed up in support of Caden. Faculty members and Adminstration placed orders and filled Mitch's all day long on their lunch... Present students and former students alike showed up with Family and Friends. But, what really got me was the students who came tired, sweaty and dirty on a friday night... some victorious and some defeated... but all were in athletic uniforms that sported the colors of both green and white and black and gold. They all stood patiently awaiting in lengthy lines just to place an order, talking and joking around with people who are supposed to be their bitter rivals.

It couldnt have been more moving... but what was the coolest thing ever... was the graysake central baseball player who walked up to SChagrin and I and said, "hello! We are here in support of one of your faculty members and we don't even know her!" You know, maybe it was the hot dog aroma that smelled so great that made him so happy to be there... but the fact that a student who didnt even know you or I, or many of the north students who were there could be so polite, respectful and compassionate towards a total stranger... made me really truely beleive that the Grayslake Central's Baseball Coach's taught those boys far more tonight than they probably will all season.

I mean I have no idea if their team won or lost tonight, but in the grand scheme of things... those baseball coaches sure did teach them and instill in them some great values of what is really truely important in life... In fact I overheard a student say, man this teacher must be awesome.... look how many people showed up for her... and all I could think was... YOU GOT THAT RIGHT! She sure is awesome!

Melissa, I know you couldnt be there tonight, but if you were you would have cried... (but don't worry I filled in, in your absence!) The Grayslake Community and our students truely brought tears to my eyes!

    Miss you, Jilly

  6. HI guys, You all look so good and you're such a cute family! Caden is adorable as always and he looks great. He's such a fighter and well on his way to a successful 2nd surgery. Way to go buddy! I'm so happy you guys had some time away from the hospital. I'm sure it was much needed and cleared your head for a bit. I know that was life-saving for me, to just take a break and return to "normal life" even for just a few minutes. It helps you to endure the endless hours that you spend in the hospital. You guys are awesome, keep it up! We're always cheering you on and praying for you guys.

    love,

    Good Morning Guys,

I loved the pictures this morning, you are such a beautiful family! Glad to hear they removed the NG tube. Maybe what Caden needs is a #11 from Mr. Taco, I bet I could put it in the blender and Caden would suck the whole bottle clean and if there was left his daddy would finish! Let me know if you need a delivery! We continue to pray for strength for you and Caden!

    We love you!
    Love,
    Tommy, Cheryl, Megan and Ty
