April 15, 2009 - Grandma Rita Visits

Hi everyone it's Melissa. I wanted to post Caden's progress from yesterday and today. Dr. Nancy re-evaluated his echo after Caden's blood work came back ok (he was not anemic). She feels the oxygen saturations are due to "dryness" in the lungs so she increased his fluid (milk) intake to 70cc. This is only a 5 cc increase. His oxygen saturations have been stable so now she decided to decrease his oxygen from .5 to .4. His saturations have slightly decreased, but nothing they are concerned about at this time. Our ultimate goal would be wean him completely off the oxygen but keep his oxygenation levels high.

Caden is still working on feeding. I feel he is getting stronger everyday and I'm excited his average intake is now between 35-40 cc. We have come a long way now he just needs to continue to work on keeping them down.

My mom arrived yesterday and is enjoying loving on Caden. Caden has improved so much since her last visit so I know she is excited to see him with his eyes open. In addition, she now gets to hold and feed him. I know Caden loves getting spoiled from Grandma Monroe. Thanks mom for coming up. I love you and appreciate all you do for us.

David has been back at work these last few days so we are also excited to have him back tomorrow. As I'm sure all of you are excited to see entries from him as they are much more exciting to read than mine!

God is good, thanks for all your prayers.
Love-
Melissa and David

  8. Happy Birthday, Melissa. I hope you enjoy your day and especially your visit with your mom. It seems as if you have some good news to report. Caden knew he had better start eating with Grandma there. He has no idea what a treat he is in for when he gets a little older. That Grandma can certainly cook!!!! Thinking of you constantly-----lots of hugs and prayers-----

  9. Hello Caden-
Today is Wednesday April 16 and it is a beautiful sunny day. I am so glad to hear that your tests have come back with some good news and that you have been taken in more food these days. Now I know it’s funny, but stop spitting everything back up on your mommy and daddy…got it?
What were we talking about yesterday…oh yes, the World Series:
The World Series is where the National League Champion plays against the American
League Champion in a best of 9 series, {Which means the first team to win 5 games}, also known as the World Series. The first World Series was played in 1903 and the Boston Americans, The American League Champion, played the Pittsburg Pirates, The National League Champion, with the first three games to be played in; starting on October 1, 1903. The series started with baseball’s winningest pitcher, Cy Young, throwing the first pitch. Boston won the series, five games to three. Giving the American league the first ever World Series. Through the 2008 season, the American League teams have won 61 of the 104 World Series played since 1903.
You truly are a Lil Warrior Caden Marshall Smith; please keep up the good work!
    Have a wonderful day Caden.

  10. Hi guys,

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MELISSA!!! I hope you are able to have a wonderful day. With the adventure you are having right now, this will certainly be a birthday you will never forget. But for many reasons, I think it will be a very special birthday to you always because the focus is all on how special and precious our families are to us, and you and David are certainly proving that to us all every day as we watch you guys help and cheer Caden on! Each day and each step of the way you are getting closer to the GRAND PRIZE of taking your sweet little guy home with you, once he is better. You guys are awesome and we're inspired by you every day, and in every moment. You deserve to have a wonderful 34th and I know it will be as sweet as your first 33 years have been. Happy Birthday!!!

    With love,
Susie and Mike Jensen and Family

  16. Good Morning Caden-
Today is Friday April 17th and it is a Beautiful Spring day. The sun is shining bright and the birds are all singing. I see that you are enjoying the visit from your Grandma; you both seem very happy.
Hey guess what? The Chicago Blackhawks won their first playoff game last night. It was very exciting…They won 3-2 in overtime. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2002 so it was nice to see them bring home a win.
The Chicago Blackhawks are a professional ice hockey team based in Chicago, Illinois. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). They have won three Stanley Cup Championships and thirteen division titles since their founding in 1926. The Blackhawks are one of the Original Six NHL teams, along with the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.
Ice hockey, often referred to simply as hockey, is a team sport played on ice. It is a fast-paced and physical sport. It is a game played on an ice rink by two opposing teams of six skaters each who try to knock a flat round puck into the opponents' goal with angled sticks.
Hey, nice shirt; “Mr. Hot Stuff” huh? I bet you have those nurses just wrapped around your little finger…don’t you?
    Have a wonderful day Caden.
