March 12, 2012 - The Dentist

Prepping for the upcoming surgeries has begun. The first thing we had to do was get a clean bill of health from the dentist. Your reaction is probably the same as mine. Why? Apparently from what I understand if there are any cavities, infections in the mouth they could spread to the bloodstream into the heart causing problems for anyone with a heart defect. We scheduled an appointment with a pediatric dentist which happened to be a good friend of David’s who he plays ball with so that was nice. A dose of penicillin was given 1 hour before the appointment to avoid any infections and he will continue to get penicillin for any/all of his dental appointments like all other individuals with heart defects. This is a standard protocol they do to avoid a condition called endocarditis. The appointment was short. It consisted of Caden straddling David laying down flat on his leg so Caden would be facing the dentist. It consisted of crying and more crying. Maybe next time it might get easier ☺ the good news is no cavities.

April 9th – Heart Cath/ENT scope

We are scheduled for a heart cath by Dr. Pellech and a throat scope by Dr. Besti on Monday April 9th. We do have some pre-op the morning of so we will leave Crystal Lake early and head up to the appointment that morning. They will be putting him under anesthesia so as soon as he recovers we hope to be heading home (hopefully the same night).

Love -
Melissa
