March 28, 2009

March 28, 2009

Hi everyone it’s Melissa. Caden is having a good day so far. He had a successful afternoon feeding taking 15cc’s orally. Caden is taking 45 cc’s total at each feeding, at this point, so what is not taken orally is fed through his NG tube (up the nose, straight to his little belly). His dinner feeding did not go so well as he only took 4cc’s orally. Caden needs to start accepting more orally if we ever want to get out of here. The doctors, prior to surgery said this could happen so we are not all that concerned. The overnight nurse has agreed to feeding Caden orally first as opposed to just going to the feeding tube. David and I feel this will be good for him as if it is NG tube fed all the time he might get lazy and never want to feed orally.

Caden has been generally quiet today with long periods of eyes wide open. He really only fusses when his diaper is full or he is being moved around a lot. Other than that (and that is not a big deal) he is a really good baby. His renal saturation levels have been in the 50s for the most part and raise into the 70’s when he is resting comfortably which is an improvement over the last couple of days.

Caden growls a bit when he moves around or, I think, just wants us to love on him more. That being said I think I heard him growl to tell Aunt Janelle Happy Birthday for him.

Glad to hear that Caden is starting to take more feedings in orally. We had a talk, I think he promised to eat more on Sunday. I look forward to reading on how he will do tomorrow. We continue to pray for the day that Caden gets to come home, his dad needs help in the basement. We love you all!

  3. Hi!

Glad to hear Caden did well today.

I spoke to Aunt Janelle to wish her a Happy Birthday and she asked many questions about little Caden and his progress. They want badly to see him also.

Those pictures of Caden with his eyes open give me goose bumps! God has given you one handsome son! I know he is looking over Caden's shoulder as he sees his parents pray for better days to come. We are doing the same. Miss all of you!

Love, Grandma Rita and Grandpa Fred

  4. It is such a relief to see you holding Caden. A week ago there were so many more machines and he is losing all those extra tubes so quickly! Thanks again for updating regularly!

    God Bless!

  5. We are so happy to hear that Caden had a good day. I love the pictures with his eyes open--again he is so cute! I can hardly wait to hold him. We are praying for feeding and renal saturation to get better so that you three can go home soon. Love to you all.

Not to worry, growling is a male Smith trait. May God continue to bless and keep you in the palm of His hand.

  7. It is go great to be able to pull up this blog and see Cadens progress each day. I look forward to hearing every little detail of his day since I am not able to be there more often. We pray that he continues to build up feeding tolerance so that you can take him home.

  8. Melissa,
Growling could also be an Absher trai, my son, Cole did that as a baby as well. I continue to follow along and give my mother updates. Sounds like your "Little Fighter" is doing just that, fighting. He is a beautiful little boy. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

  13. Hello Caden-
Today is March 29th and guess what...It snowed!
It used to be normal for it so snow in the spring but, it hasn't snowed this late in March for awhile now. The snow was perfect for making a snowman and having snowball fights. I know that your daddy can't wait for the day to build a snowman or have a snowball fight with you. A word of advice, your daddy has a pretty good arm and decent aim but his reflexes aren't what they used to be...So you should be able to take him down
Speaking of your daddy, tell him to buy you a baseball shirt now that you are able to wear real clothes. I believe that your dad likes the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians these days!
Hey nice picture…you have great big beautiful eyes and it was very nice to see them open. You know, you are making tremendous progress but, you are going to need to start eating a bit more if you ever want to get out of that place...got it! I promise that the food will be so much better at home. Keep up the good work!
    Good night Caden.
