We can officially chalk Caden Marshall’s chest closure a win! This is a big step on the road to recovery and Melissa and I could not be any happier. I had the chance to look at the chest x-ray after closure and it literally looks as if the doctors took wires, fed through each side of the breast bone, and twisted them together like closing a loaf of bread. We know that there are bumps in the road that will inevitably happen however we will rejoice in the progress Caden has made to date.
Today Caden’s heart rate has normalized in the 150’s and his oxygenation levels have been consistently in 60s since we addressed it yesterday afternoon. These are both very good signs that he has accepted, and can tolerate, the closure of the chest. Caden is once again receiving feedings of moms breast milk and on a steady diet of lipids. Lipids are essentially calories that will ensure Caden maintains weight. Also, the doctors determined the timing is right to reduce the amount of Fentanyl that Caden is receiving. The negative to this is that Caden will feel more discomfort however the benefit is the reduction of fentanyl is important step toward the next “win”. If Caden responds well to the reduced fentanyl than they will take him off of it completely and then will focus on removing him from the ventilator! That is right, a big invasive machine could be disappearing her in the next day or two. Melissa and I are very excited. One less machine means one step closer to holding him!. Melissa is also excited about this next win as I promised her that I would shave when the ventilator comes out.
Personally Melissa and I had a good day. We had some great friends drop by for a visit both expected and unexpected and we loved it. You know who you are and thank you so very much. We are going to head back to RMH soon (9PM now) and unwind from our day. We continue to pray for Caden and continue to thank God for the blessings that we do have which is family and friends. Our parents are going to be leaving us tomorrow, after a full week, and we are going to see how we do alone. We feel we can do it now however are fully cognizant that we could not have done this week with out them. Moms and Dads- we love you. Thank you so much.

Caden,
ReplyDeleteToday is March 21st and it was another gorgeous day. I don’t know how you are doing it, but please keep sending us all of this sunshine…Thank you very much! Hey, I hear that you are kicking all kinds of butt and that you may be getting off of that big contraption, that they call a ventilator, within the next couple of days…please keep up the good work and lets get rid of that thing. Your Mom and Dad are so looking forward to give you a big squeeze…Don’t tell anyone, but so am I! Besides, the sooner you get off of that ventilator, the sooner your Dad will shave and that will also make Mommy happy! Ok my little friend, I am getting a bit tied so please try and get some rest so that you can continue your progress to your tremendous journey home. Have a wonderful night…sweet dreams!
I love you!
David and Melissa,
ReplyDeleteTears( of joy) could easily roll down my face this morning! I had to check your blog before I left town. I will make one more stop to see my wonderful grandson and then head for home. I am amazed at the strength that all three of you have shown. I will miss the daily hugs from you, the small little bubbles Caden would show us, and the sweet little kick from Caden when he had had enough of the manipulation of caring adults!
My road home is nothing compared to what you all have been through, but the sun is shining on Caden and me and we are off to another blessed day!
Love, Grandma Rita
THRILLED! That's the first word that came to mind when I read your post this morning. Caden is looking so good. Will pray that he comes off the vent quickly & without a hitch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping us updated on your journey. We look forward to the news everyday. Oh, Luke prayed for Caden last night. It was really cute.
Thank you so much for the update! It is a very nice way to start the day hearing about his progress. Thank you for sharing specifically what we need to pray for. I will be off to church soon and will lift up all 3 of you in prayer again. God bless you all! Hope it's another good day for you!

Hey guys....
ReplyDeleteIt's the Thormeyer clan...We are so glad to see that Caden is responding well to treatment. And Melissa, don't feel emotional...I cried reading your entries and I am proud to see that you are being strong.
Keep staying strong and remember that God will not give you more than you can handle.
God Bless,
Shelby
I must have checked the blog 100 times yesterday to see Caden's progress....I had too much March Madness on the brain and I finally had to go to sleep. I awoke this morning to the huge sunrise blaring in my window and saw this as a huge sign of Caden's orogress....checked the blog and was so happy to hear of his yesterday!!!! Jackson looked at the blog with me and kept asking "did he fall down and that is why he has a band-aid on his head"- the things a 3 year old can come up with- look what you have to look forward to. Have a good Sunday and keep strong!! Love to Caden!! Love, Meg
